Anja Spang, Endowed Professor of Symbioses in Evolution at the University of Amsterdam and Research Leader at NIOZ, receives the award in the category Natual Sciences for her fundamental study on  Mysterious microbes.  Spang studies the special role that various micro-organisms such as archaea have played in major evolutionary changes, including the origin of eukaryotes to which humans belong. She has discovered an impressive number of new archaea variants in recent years and has found revolutionary evidence in support of the hypothesis that eukaryotic organisms (such as humans) once evolved from a symbiosis between archaea and bacteria. What makes Spang’s research especially relevant at present is that archaea also influence the climate. Exactly what their role there is is a question that Spang plans to focus on in the near future.

About the Ammodo Science Award for fundamental research
Every two years, Ammodo presents the Ammodo Science Award for fundamental research to eight outstanding mid-career scientists conducting fundamental research. The Award includes a cash prize of EUR 350,000 and covers all four scientific domains: Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Biomedical Sciences. Winners are selected by advisory committees made up of renowned scientists.

In addition, since 2020, Ammodo has presented the Ammodo Science Award for groundbreaking research in even calendar years, expressing appreciation for research that is internationally recognised, high quality, potentially groundbreaking, and carried out collaboratively. NIOZ onderzoeker Anja Spang wint Ammodo Science Award 2023

Tazuko van Berkel, Stan Brouns, Tatiana Filatova, Jingyuan Fu, Merel Keijzer, Daniël Lakens, Hugo Snippert en Anja Spang zijn de winnaars van de Ammodo Science Award for fundamental research 2023. Dat heeft Ammodo vandaag bekendgemaakt. De laureaten ontvangen ieder een geldbedrag van 350.000 euro. Dat geld kunnen ze de komende jaren gebruiken om nieuwe wegen te verkennen in fundamenteel wetenschappelijk onderzoek. De Ammodo Science Award for fundamental research 2023 wordt uitgereikt aan acht wetenschappers verdeeld over de vier wetenschapsdomeinen Biomedical Sciences, Humanities, Natural Sciences en Social Sciences.

Anja Spang, Bijzonder hoogleraar Symbiose in Evolutie aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam en onderzoeksleider bij het NIOZ, krijgt de Award voor haar fundamenteel onderzoek naar raadselachtige microben. Spang bestudeert de bijzondere rol die verschillende micro-organismen zoals archaea gespeeld hebben bij grote evolutionaire veranderingen, waaronder de oorsprong van eukaryoten waartoe ook de mens behoort. Ze ontdekte de afgelopen jaren een indrukwekkend aantal nieuwe archaea-varianten, en ze vond revolutionair bewijs voor de hypothese dat eukaryote organismen (zoals de mens) ooit zijn voortgekomen uit een symbiose tussen archaea en bacteriën. Extra relevant aan Spangs onderzoek is dat de archaea eveneens van invloed zijn op het klimaat. Wat hun rol daar precies is, is een vraag waar Spang zich de komende tijd op wil richten.

Tweejaarlijks reikt Ammodo de Ammodo Science Award for fundamental research uit aan acht excellente mid-career wetenschappers die fundamenteel onderzoek verrichten. Deze Award omvat een geldbedrag van 350.000 euro en wordt uitgereikt binnen vier wetenschapsdomeinen: Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences en Biomedical Sciences. De winnaars worden geselecteerd door adviescommissies van gerenommeerde wetenschappers.

Daarnaast reikt Ammodo sinds 2020 in de even kalenderjaren de Ammodo Science Award for groundbreaking research uit, waarmee de waardering wordt uitgesproken voor onderzoek dat internationaal erkend, hoogstaand en in potentie baanbrekend is en dat in gezamenlijkheid wordt uitgevoerd. De Ammodo Science Award for fundamental research 2023 wordt dit voorjaar uitgereikt in het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
