Dolman, professor of Earth Sciences at Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam, is looking forward to the appointment. "I would like to further strengthen the internal cohesion within the institute, using my professional academic background. I have worked a lot with young talents, aiming to ensure diversity and a safe social and technical working environment. In addition, I see opportunities to link my field of expertise to marine research".

Professor Dolman's scientific expertise focuses on climate science, especially the interaction of the terrestrial biosphere with the hydrological cycle, biogeochemical cycles and the atmosphere. This includes, for example, monitoring natural and man-made greenhouse gas emissions. Dolman brings with him a large network through his involvement in many (inter)national programs on climate change. For example, he is chair of the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) steering committee and honorary professor at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology.

The choice for Dolman follows (inter)national recruitment and positive advice from the appointment advisory committee and the works council of the NIOZ. "He has a broad background in Earth Sciences and is used to building bridges between disciplines (biology, geology, climate) and in this way can add something new to the NIOZ. We see him as an inspiring and approachable leader who can further strengthen and consolidate the role of the NIOZ and maintain its position as a key player on an international level”. So said Marcel Levi, Chairman of the NWO-I Foundation Board and Chairman of the Nomination Committee. "We are confident that Han will be able to build on the successful period of Henk Brinkhuis. We would like to thank Henk for his great efforts for the NIOZ". Brinkhuis will return as a researcher at Utrecht University and the NIOZ. Brinkhuis was also recently elected Chair of the international scientific forum of the world-wide International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP).

Dolman sees many opportunities: "In this UN Decade of the Ocean, the NIOZ, together with the Dutch marine research community, is doing fundamental research into detecting and understanding trends, processes and tipping points in our oceans and coastal seas.  In this way, the NIOZ makes important contributions to solving societal problems such as warming and acidification, rising sea levels, coastal protection and biodiversity conservation. My ambition is that in a few years’ time NIOZ will be seen even more as the 'KNMI of the sea' (KNMI is the Dutch national weather service). To achieve this, not only do the young marine scientists have to be given the opportunity to excel, but the NIOZ will also seek more cooperation and make itself heard more often."

Han Dolman benoemd tot directeur Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee (NIOZ)

Het bestuur van de institutenorganisatie van NWO heeft prof. dr. Han Dolman voor een periode van vijf jaar benoemd tot algemeen directeur/wetenschappelijk directeur van het Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee (NWO/NIOZ). Per 1 november 2021 zal hij de huidige directeur prof. dr. Henk Brinkhuis opvolgen die zijn tweede en formeel laatste termijn van vijf jaar directeurschap (2011-2021) heeft volbracht.

Dolman, hoogleraar Aardwetenschappen aan de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, verheugt zich op de aanstelling. ”Ik wil graag vanuit mijn professionele academische achtergrond de interne cohesie binnen het instituut verder versterken. Ik heb veel gewerkt met jong talent waarbij ik zorg wil dragen voor diversiteit en een veilige sociale en technische werkomgeving. Daarnaast zie ik kansen om mijn vakgebied te koppelen aan het mariene onderzoek".

Professor Dolman’s wetenschappelijke expertise richt zich op de klimaatwetenschap, vooral de interactie van de aardse biosfeer met de hydrologische cyclus, biogeochemische cycli en de atmosfeer. Dit betreft bijvoorbeeld het monitoren van natuurlijke en door de mens veroorzaakte broeikasgasemissies. Hij neemt een groot netwerk mee door zijn betrokkenheid bij vele (inter)nationale programma’s over klimaatverandering. Zo is hij voorzitter van de stuurgroep Globale Climate Observing System (GCOS) en honorair professor aan de Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology.

De keuze voor Dolman volgt na (inter-)nationale werving en positieve adviezen van de benoemingsadviescommissie en de ondernemingsraad van het NIOZ. “Hij heeft een brede achtergrond in de aardwetenschappen en is gewend om bruggen te slaan tussen disciplines (biologie, geologie, klimaat) en kan op die manier iets nieuws toevoegen aan het NIOZ. Wij zien in hem een inspirerende benaderbare leider, die de rol van het NIOZ verder kan versterken en consolideren en de positie van het NIOZ als internationale sleutelspeler kan vasthouden”. Aldus Marcel Levi, voorzitter Stichtingsbestuur NWO-I en voorzitter van de benoemingscommissie. “Wij vertrouwen erop dat Han de succesvolle periode van Henk Brinkhuis verder zal kunnen uitbouwen. Graag willen wij hierbij Henk dan ook bedanken voor zijn grote inspanningen voor het NIOZ”. Henk Brinkhuis zal terugkeren als onderzoeker bij  de Universiteit Utrecht en het NIOZ. Daarnaast is Brinkhuis onlangs verkozen tot voorzitter van het internationaal wetenschappelijk forum van het wereldomvattende International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP).

Dolman ziet veel kansen: “In deze UN Decade of the Ocean doet het NIOZ met de Nederlandse mariene onderzoek gemeenschap fundamenteel onderzoek naar het opsporen en begrijpen van trends, processen en omslagpunten in onze oceanen en kustzeeën.  Hiermee levert het NIOZ belangrijke bijdragen aan het oplossen van maatschappelijke problemen zoals opwarming en verzuring, zeespiegelstijging, kustbescherming en behoud van biodiversiteit. Mijn ambitie is dat het NIOZ over een aantal jaren nog meer gezien zal worden als het ‘KNMI van de zee’. Hiervoor moeten niet alleen de jonge mariene wetenschappers de kans krijgen om te excelleren, maar zal het NIOZ nog meer samenwerking zoeken en veel van zich laten horen”.
