NIOZ sabbatical

Possibilities for researchers to spend a sabbatical at NIOZ

NIOZ values a good relationship with Dutch universities. This is part of NIOZ's national mission as a marine research institute. To make that connection even stronger, NIOZ started the University Forum NIOZ (UF-NIOZ) in 2022. UF-NIOZ is a network of deans, professors and associate professors attached to a university research faculty that has strong interfaces with marine research. Besides further activating and shaping UF-NIOZ, NIOZ also has the ambition to offer researchers and associate professors/staff from Dutch universities the opportunity to spend a sabbatical at NIOZ in the coming years.

Guidelines
NIOZ offers scope for researchers and associate professors/staff from Dutch universities to spend a sabbatical at one of NIOZ's four scientific departments. In case of interest from a university, NIOZ and the university make agreements on:

  • Duration of the sabbatical and attendance in day(s) per week.
  • Room within one of the scientific departments of NIOZ.
  • NIOZ makes its own infrastructure available.
  • University gives room for its own employee to do a sabbatical and pays salary costs.
  • Additional costs, such as accommodation on Texel or in Yerseke.

Benefits
The following benefits are provided for NIOZ and the universities. A sabbatical at NIOZ:

  • Gives researchers and associate professors/staff the opportunity to expand their own network.
  • Provides a meeting place for research and collaboration, which can lead to new research proprosals/programmes/themes.
  • Provides open access to the NIOZ infrastructure (laboratories, equipment, instruments), which can lead to further utilisation and optimisation of that infrastructure.

Interested?
If you are interested in a sabbatical at NIOZ, you can contact the head of the NIOZ scientific department in consultation with your manager. Together, you will look at the possibilities and, upon agreement, come to substantive and practical arrangements.
