My PhD-project focusses on the Irminger Current, which is responsible for the northward transport of heat and freshwater into the Irminger Basin. I will analyze the Irminger Current’s variability on subseasonal to interannual time scales.

The goal of the project is to identify causes for the Irminger Currents variability and to understand its contribution to the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. I will mainly focus on mooring data from five deep-reaching moorings which are part of OSNAP (Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Project) combined with hydrographic section and altimetry data.

Cruises and Expeditions:

  • RV Pelagia cruise, PE473 - OSNAP East, July-August 2020, Irminger Sea
  • RV Maria S. Merian, MSM74 - OSNAP West, May-June 2018, Labrador Sea
  • Station Nord/ Villum Research Station, PAMARCMIP, March-April 2018, northern Greenland
  • RV Maria S. Merian, MSM54 - OSNAP West, May-June 2016, Labrador Sea
  • RV Meteor, M119, September-October 2015, Tropical Atlantic

Changes in North Atlantic deep western boundary currents might not be related to variations in the strength of the MOC
Scientists discovered that changes in the density of North Atlantic deep western boundary currents were not directly linked to the strength of the Meridional Overturning Circulation in 2014-2018. This new study, through the international efforts of…
